Let's Paint a PP2!

Just hammering out a PP2 dome while watching the Holiday Special. I'm quite mad, you know.

Tons of activity in the last few months that I'd like to share. Lots more to come!

paint the diamonds....before you put the green and grey down....im farely certain the red/blue were ruminants of the supertrooper helmets they were before being painted....if you look close at the ROTJ helmet you can see theyre under the green...

you can kinda see what I mean here....notice how the white is poking through the red and blue (black)

Eagle eye, as usual, Dom. I'm glad that I still have a ways to go before painting them, because I'll have to consider it. With the RotJ helmets I've done, I've intentionally painting the triangles 'haphazardly,' and I've found that painting over the base silver gives the same effect. But I'd certainly like to know for sure which is more accurate. Thank you!

As for the helmet, here's a quick rundown:

I've been itching for another commission/paintup, but I've been lazy on posting threads for them. The last paintup I did was on a really short time span, so I figured I'd put up a thread later. Anyways, a former commissioner who decided to focus on other projects had an untouched MDF helmet laying around, which he agreed to sell to me. It's essentially a cleaned up MF. And since it has lineage going back to the PP2 helmet, I figured that it'd be somewhat sacrilegious to paint it anything other than PP2. On the MDF helmet, some of the more noticeable bumps and bruises have been removed, as well as the physical damage, which I ended up having to put back in (ironic, don't you think?). Even though I've always been a fan of all of the Boba Fett helmets, I've fallen in love with the PP2. It's paint scheme is chaotic, ugly, and doesn't make much sense at all, but it's subtleties are also quite beautiful.

The helmet is absolutely bare bones, with no accessories at all, so I was able to acquire a set of all of the extra goodies from wasteland (great guy, For Sale thread here), along with two sets of rangefinder tops from Terminal Fettler, including an upgrade (thread here) for my FPH2-RotJ (still my first love).

The paint colors/technique is quite similar to the RotJ, so I already have most of the colors I'll need. On the never-ending quest for better accuracy, though, I'll be experimenting with new mixes and such. I've also been delving into the dark hobby of acquiring vintage paint (scored my first square bottle Floquil recently!).

Anyways, that's what's up with this lid. I can't wait to get back to it. Lots of pictures to come!

besides ESB, PP2 has always been a close second for me, for all the reasons you have mentioned. i will enjoy this...

I guess I should update this thread, right?

Okay, here's a picture history of where we're at. I spent an awful lot of time on the mandibles. Got them pretty thin and uniform, which is always nice:

I started on the back panels. Stenciling was a beast! Similar to the RotJ, there's a lot of shading that has to be done in between layers. I decided to use a straight (bright) green for the main color, and rely on misting to give the appropriate look.

After the stupid back panels are done, we're ready to actually start the helmet! I masked out the lower and upper cheeks in one step (since the green of the lower cheeks spills onto the uppers), and painted:

Moving on to the dome, I knew I was in for some fun (read: NO FUN):

The results were pretty sweet:

Moving on to my favorite part, the mandibles!

And now for the interesting part. I was able to find this:

From what I've been able to find, this paint is from the 1960's. It's a BEAUTIFUL color, but proved VERY difficult to work with. It caused my airgun to clog up in a really weird way. Not exactly clogged, but 'impacted.' Hard to explain. However, the color was GORGEOUS:

So that's where we are. Still much more to do!

How did that bottle of paint stay liquid after all these years?

I have Vintage rock island maroon that is still liquid also....but the new color testors makes british crimson is not liquid at all...not sure why but every bottle is sludge

The paint was unopened. Still had the plastic seal on it, which kept it airtight (mostly). I will say, it STANK! And considering it did a number on my airbrush, I'd say that the chemical composition has changed. It's also very possible that the paint predates modern airbrushes, and was intended to be brushed on, rather than sprayed. It's also possible that the thinner I used (Testors/Floquil) wasn't a good match (the label recommends 'Dio-Sol'). Or maybe it's just OLD lol! I have other vintage paints (Caboose, Dark Blue, SP Scarlet for the stripes, etc.) that have worked fine, but the Diesel Maroon is by far the oldest (square bottle).

As far as modern paints, Dom, I know exactly what you mean. I find the Humbrols are the worst at that. It's like they plop down a lump of pigment and a squirt of thinner and then seal it. Lol sometimes they can be a pain to mix.

I've been working the last day or two on cleaning up the helmet, removing the remaining mask, getting ready for ears. I'll be misting the entire helmet by the weekend, as I feel like I really need to knock down the pinkish highlights - they seem to stand out too much.

After that, I really can't wait to get the ears on, especially with the new TF topper. I ground down the interior of the helmet to clear out the key slots, which worked like a dream (thanks, Ryan!).

Anyways, I'm still jamming on the lid, lots more pics will be up soon! Here's a quick one with stripes. Thanks for looking, everyone!
